ホーム > English > about > About SAGA-LS About SAGA Light Source (SAGA-LS) The SAGA Light Source (SAGA-LS) is a compact third generation synchrotron radiation source and being constructed in Tosu City, Saga Prefecture, in the northern part of Kyushu, Japan. SAGA-LS is the first synchrotron light facility in Japan, which is constructed by the prefectual government. In 1997 the Science and Technology Council of Saga Prefecture advocated construction of a synchrotron light source in Saga which will play a pivotal role in the promotion of industrial development through the collaboration between universities and industries in Kyushu. Then in 1998 the Committees of the Examination for Saga Synchrotron Light Facility determined the basic plan of the Synchrotron Light Project in Saga. Then two committees were formed in 1999, one for promotion of facility arrangement and the other for promotion of utilization of the light source. The former discussed the details of the accelerator complex and determined the construction schedule. On the other hand the latter discussed the plan for promotion of utilization and discussed what kind of beamlines should be built at SAGA-LS. In addition, Saga Prefectural Government organized the Forum for Utilization and Research, by inviting researchers in the universities and industries in Kyushu area. The Forum consists of twelve research groups and hold workshops and symposia to make research plan in the various research fields. In 2002 Saga University established Synchrotron Light Application Center which is expected to be liaison center between Saga Prefecture and universities. The Conceptual Design Report (CDR) written by the machine group headed by Dr. Tomimasu was reviewed by the Evaluation Committee and the final design of accelerator complex was fixed in March 2001. Construction of SAGA-LS started in the fall of 2001 and we expect that the commissioning will start in October 2004. The building was completed in the fall of 2002. In 2002 Saga Prefectural Government decided to build three beamlines which will be used in the first phase of machine operation and asked to the Forum to make beamline proposals. Based on the accepted proposals Saga Prefectural Government designed three beamlines for engineering science researches. Saga University established Synchrotron Light Application Center is also constructing one beamline for its own use. In 2004 Kyushu Synchrotron Light Research Center was established.
